Patch to Cross Over Cable?

I'm trying to setup a Local Area Network, between two computers. They are both connected to the Internet seperately and I am using a cross-over cable which leads into a two-way adapter, this just allows me to connect two cables together, which is then followed on by a patch cable. Is this the right setup? Or is it Patch - Patch, Cross - Cross?

To link the 2 computers in the way you wish, you would need to connect the PCs only by use of a cross-over cable. as the computers are already independently connected to the internet, it sounds as if the connector you are speaking of isn't a switch / hub as this would switch them automatically. Remove the connector and use a cross-over cable connected to each Pcs ethernet port..... only draw back....... one machine will connect directly to the internet while the other connects through the first
