5m Lan Network

anyone who can give me estimate cost of -setting up wired LAN network (in Manila)?

i need estimate cost (labor and materials) for setting up wired network for company with 8-10 pc. Distance of each computer is 3-5m only.

Not sure on currency in Philippines so will use US dollars, with prices and products found in North America.

You should be fine with SoHo equipment (Small Office, Home Office). Corporate equipment is very expensive and costs upto 10x more. THe advantage of corporate equipment is more features on routers such as a deep packet inspection Firewall and advanced port filters and detailed logging. Also corp switches can use DES encryption on their uplink.

You likely don't need this. Off the shelf SoHo routers don't have great features, or I should say, one router won't have all the nice features you want. You can buy an off the shelf router or flash an existing router with Custom Firmware like Tomato, OpenWRT, or DD-WRT.

For a router, some features you want are
QoS (Quality of Service) - Prioritizes packets from LAN to WAN so certain applications respond quicker to WEB access requests. This feature is great to conserve bandwidth. Most SoHo QoS aren't very customizable, which is unfortunate. 3rd Party Firmware like Tomato (best QoS I've Used), can restrict the bandwidth from a single PC rather than just an application or a TCP/UDP port range.

Firewall Filter with scheduler
Restrict access to certain ports like 80 for HTTP or known P2P ports. This is a VERY important feature.

Static DHCP assignment by MAC
Assign IP addresses to a specific MAC address of a computer's NIC. Easier to mange than manual assignment.

Wake On LAN
Wake a computer up remotely from the router admin if a computer shuts off from a power outage.

Embedded VPN server, or VPN passthrough with 1492MTU or greater.
Most SoHo routers only support an MTU of 500 or lower when VPN connections are passing through, anything higher and the router will crash.

Gigabit Switch
It's nice to have a router with a gigabit switch so you don't need to buy another 1GB switch to get faster file transfers.

Jumbo Frames
Getting a router and switch than supports 9k jumbo frames or greater (MTU default is 1500 over 100mbit ethernet), will increase the transfer speed of the LAN and also reduce the CPU utilization of the computers involved in the file transfer by a LOT.

As for switches themselves, a regular gigabit switch will work.

A cheaper alternative to get you started and has great corporate features (Linksys WRT54GL, not WRT54G or WRT54GS). This router is very common and can be bought just about anywhere.

You need to flash it with DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Tomato. OpenWRT (with X-WRT kamikaze) is the most advanced but can be overwhelming. It is the most customizable firmware out there especially if you want to create separate private LANs depending on the LAN port of the router. You can also convert a LAN port into a second WAN port to get faster Internet from two (or More) ISPs.

DD-WRT and OpenWRT support VPN servers embedded into the router (so you don't need a VPN listener on a LAN PC). They also both support VOIP SIP management (like asterisk) if you have PBX phones or an ATA SIP adapter - use FreeWorldDialup. Tomato lacks these features, like the Tomato Web Admin. All firmwares support the "features" listed above, but the WRT54GL lacks a gigabit switch.

You can use a PC as your gateway or router and it has some great advantages (just get two ethernet PCI cards). An OS like monowall or FreeNAS+monowall is a great way to go. DD-WRT has firmware for the x86 architecture, but Monowall is better. Asterisk can be installed too. THe downside is it consumes a lot more power.

For cables, get cat5e ethernet cables. Regular cat5 cables won't support gigabit ethernet, so get cat5e. cat6 is too expensive. You can buy them from a warehouse for cheap.

For file Servers. You can go with a Windows SMB server and mount the SMB shares on each computer on the LAN, or go with iSCSI. iSCSI is simply put amazing. It is WAY faster than SMB or any other TCP packet headed protocol like BSD's NFS or Apple's AFP. You also mount the iSCSI drive remotely (over the network) as a physical drive rather than a network drive. FreeNAS is an OS that supports iSCSI array server and virtualization in RAID 0,1,5 etc. It is amazing.
